A report this week by the charity Independent Age showed that pensioners over 75 – the so-called ‘Silent Generation’– are thousands of pounds a year worse off than their younger counterparts. In fact, the charity estimates that 950,000 pensioners over 75 are living in poverty.

Brexit – it is the word that is on everyone’s lips, will we, won’t we? Of course until the referendum results from June 23 are known, no-one will know the answer for sure, but that does not stop us worrying in the meantime about what might happen to the status quo if we do vote to leave the EU.

This week has seen some positive savings news in the form of a new entrant to the Easy Access Best Buy Table and the initial steps into the cash ISA market from a provider that has been more well known up to now for its fixed rate bonds.Whilst there are still far more providers leaving the best buy tables than entering them, it is encouraging to see a few providers bucking the trend and giving us hope that there may be better news around the corner.

Halifax has slashed the rate for new savers on it's popular Help to Buy ISA, a move, although disappointing, was not wholly unsurprising given its lead in the market for so long.
