If you’re applying for Grant of Probate following the death of a loved one, the process has just been made simpler with HM Courts & Tribunal Services announcing the expansion of their online probate service as part of their £1bn programme to modernise the justice system.
Dealing with the death of a loved one is not only emotionally stressful but can be practically stressful with the amount of administration that’s needed, so anything that makes this process simpler can only be a good thing.
Traditionally, you’d have to apply for Grant of Probate by visiting a probate registry or solicitor’s office, however provided you are eligible you can now apply from the comfort of your own home.
According to GOV.UK’s website the online process was trialled before being officially launched to the public, with 93% of those who used it saying they were satisfied or very satisfied with the service. This follows the successful launch of the online divorce service which has significantly reduced errors in divorce applications since launch to less than 1%.
Probate charges have been slammed recently as a new fee structure is coming into force from the new tax year. Those on the highest bands will see fees rise from up to just £215 today to as much as £6,000!
